Frequently Asked Questions
- Rigging
- Q Why do you have a wire stayed aluminum mast and not an aluminum or carbon freestanding mast?
- A The Transit_380 is to be utilized as an entry level boat and/or trainer, is it important that these new sailors learn how to use shroud adjusters, mast tuning, sail adjustment and sailing techniques that are more often found in virtually all larger boats. And the very high cost factor of carbon versus aluminum does not favor a carbon mast on a boat this small. The weight savings are only in bare tube weight and do not justify the more expensive carbon.
- Boat Manufacturer
- Q The Transit_380 is new but who is the actual manufacturer of the boat?
- A The builder is Precision Boat Works, they are entering their 28th. year of production of boats from 15 feet to 28 feet and occasionally take on builds for other projects than their own boats. For example, they build the Colgate 26 for Colgate's Offshore Sailing School. Those boats are used by Colgate as well as the United States Naval Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, as well many other private owners. Precision Boat Works has a long history of building solid boats and the other Precision models are also Jim Taylor designs.
- Construction
- Q How is the Transit_380 constructed? Are you using the new high impact plastics we see on some small boats?
- A The tried and true way for simple, strongly built small sailboats. We start with ISO/NPG gelcoat, and the first layer of fiberglass is put in the boat by hand using Vinylester resin. All subsequent laminates are also hand laid, as well as the hull and deck are completely hand laid. Maybe a bit old fashioned but that method gives us a very strong boat at a competitive cost. As far as plastics, we prefer the hand laid fiberglass as it allows us a much better non-skid pattern for safety's sake as well as a boat that if it is ever damaged, can be easily repaired by a fiberglass shop that has basic fiberglass repair skills. Compare the two materials face to face and you will see the difference.
